Event details

Vietnam is one of the most dynamic markets in the world with a GDP increase of 7.01% in 2019. In the course of the catch-up process of the previous years, the country offers many opportunities. In addition to the ASEAN Economic Community and the "Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement", the upcoming FTA between the EU and Vietnam offers particularly new opportunities for German companies. For example, due to the more favorable legal framework conditions, the country has become an attractive sourcing and investment location (including automotive, metal processing, electronics). The more powerful middle class and the growing economy also give Vietnam greater prominence as a marketplace (including mechanical engineering, chemical products, consumer goods).

The country has fought rigorously with COVID-19 at the early stage. There hasn’t been any new locally infected COVID-19 case since mid-April. At the beginning of May, various “social distancing” measures have been lifted and the life in Vietnam is mostly going back to normal. However, the country's economy is suffering from the decline in global demand for consumer goods. While the global economic crisis is slowing down the dynamics, the internal market still remains as a driver of growth. The result is that while Vietnam's economy will not achieve the targeted 6.8% GDP growth in 2020, it will expand at least 2.7% (IMF forecast). This makes the country to become as one of the few ASEAN economies with positive growth prospects and remains an anchor point for economic dynamism in 2020.
