Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, elected leader of CDU - Germany’s ruling party

December 07, 2018: The CDU elected Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer as the new chairwoman to succeed Chancellor Angela Merkel as its new leader. Paul Ziemiak as the new general secretary. Angela Merkel remains the German Chancellor, but this term will be her last one. AKK likely will lead the CDU into the 2021 federal elections and could become the country's next Chancellor.

Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer:

Born on 9 August 1962 in Völklingen; married, three children.

1982: Abitur, studied politics and law at Trier and Saarbrücken University, 1990 graduated the master’s degree in politics and public law.

2000: Appointment as Minister for Interior and Sport of Saarland

2011-2018: Prime Minister of Saarland

02/2018: Elected as CDU General Secretary
